Concours d’Elegance, literally translated, means “parade of elegance.” Since its inception, the term referred to a very special type of carriage or automobile show.

In the 1920′s the first Concours d’Elegance was staged as an elegant marketing effort in France. The custom automobile coach builders and fashion couturiers of Paris were making luxury products of important design and wanted a new and different way to reach their markets. In an effort to create a unique way to reach the market, an idea was developed of a grand exhibition combining both automobiles and fashion.

Fashion models dressed in the latest Paris creations would drive new automobiles up to a reviewing stand. The automobiles tended to be luxury cars decked-out with custom coach work. In many cases they were one-of-a-kind. The models would step out of the cars and model their fashions for the crowd. The cars and fashions were judged and awards given. The awards were based on beauty, design and style.

Before World War II, the Concours d’Elegance format was popular and became a premiere social event. The underlying objective was for manufacturers to reach the market for these beautiful high design products. Concours d’Elegance became the most elegant method of selling products. The Concours d’Elegance was meant not only as a car show, but also as a total extravaganza of style.

The Concours d’Elegance theme faded from the European market during WWII. It reemerged in the 1950′s in Pebble Beach.

Cast vinyl is a premium material that stretches easily to best conform to the vehicle’s surface. When brushed over with a clear laminate, cast vinyl provides a paint-like finish on cars, buses, and even boats.

In addition to increased flexibility, we  prefer cast vinyl because the sheets don’t shrink much during manufacturing, and also because they maintain colors better during printing. However, cast vinyl wraps are considerably more expensive than calendered material and isn’t recommended if you need a vehicle wrap for less than a year.

Calendered vinyl has strong “memory” – it snaps back to its original form after being stretched. This means it doesn’t conform as well to vehicles. It’s also difficult to match colors. But calendered vinyl is much cheaper than cast material, and it can be produced in greater quantities. This makes it an acceptable solution for vinyl wraps lasting only a few months – especially if used on flat surfaces such as the side of a box truck – but not for long-term advertising.

Vinyl wrap methods

Pleasant Details offer different methods for wrapping your vehicle, depending on how much surface area you wish to cover.

• Complete wrap – Covers the entire surface of the vehicle. Includes perforated window film (known as “window perfs”) that covers glass surfaces without impacting the driver’s visibility.
• Half wrap – Covers half the sides of the vehicle and extends around the back. Half wraps may also include a logo for the hood.
• Window graphics only – Graphics printed on window perfs.
• Vinyl lettering/spot graphics only - A simple and inexpensive solution that may include 1 to 2 colors, a company logo, and/or a call to action on the side of the vehicle.

There are four main steps to creating vehicle wraps: designing, proofing, printing, and installing.

Designing

The design work is the longest part of the vehicle wrap process. It can take anywhere from 5 to 40 hours, depending on the complexity of the design and style of vehicle. Certain graphics may have to be specially cut and contoured to fit parts of the vehicle, which can take longer.

Proofing

Once the design is ready,  we create an electronic or printed proof of the wrap. It’s important to carefully examine the proof for any mistakes you find and immediately note any changes you want made to the final wrap before printing. Any changes you have after the wrap goes into final production can delay turnaround and add significantly to your costs.

Printing

Pleasant Details prints the finished design on 48-to 60-inch-wide vinyl sheets using a large-format, solvent-based printer. These printers produce vehicle wraps and other signage at a very high resolution. Complete vehicle wraps are typically printed in multiple panels and carefully pieced together during installation.

After printing the wrap, we set it aside for a few hours to “gas out.” This prevents the vinyl from bubbling or wrinkling during application.

Installing

Before we can begin installing your wrap, your vehicle needs to be thoroughly cleaned so that the wrap will adhere properly. Taking it through a high-pressure car wash that uses powerful detergents should clean off most grime and debris.

Once cleaned, we carefully align the vinyl panels to ensure proper fit and applies them to the vehicle. The installer uses a small tool like a heat gun to stretch and reposition the vinyl, and a squeegee to eliminate imperfections. When finished, he may apply a UV-coated laminate to the surface to protect the wrap and provide a glossier finish. This process also makes the wrap easier to remove when you no longer need it.

It’s important to note that installers rely on sharp razors to manipulate the vinyl and remove excess material around door handles and crevices. Even with expert installers, there’s some potential for minor nicks and scratches to the surface.

Caring for your wrapped vehicle

To keep the wrap clean, hand wash the vehicle regularly with soap, water, and a clean rag. Avoid high-pressure or bristle-based car washes that could lift up or tear the wrap, as well as waxes that could remove the laminate or minimize the wrap’s adhesion.

Vehicle wrap shops typically provide straightforward pricing – either a rate per square foot or a fixed dollar amount for the entire project. With either pricing model, your car wrap prices should include the entire project: consultations, design work, materials, and installation.

Most shops typically charge $12 to $16 per square foot for cast vinyl material to wrap vehicles. Project complexity and total installation time dictates the total price. Simple installations on smooth, flat surfaces are less expensive, while vehicles with deep concaves or complex designs will push car wrap prices to the high end. Less expensive calendered vinyl costs about $5 to $8 per square foot.

Special requests – like rush delivery, proofs printed to the actual vinyl, or changes to the design post-proof – can add significantly to your total costs.

If a sign shop provides a flat rate for the complete wrap, the costs typically vary based on the size and type of vehicle:

• Cars, compact SUVs – $2,000 to $3,000
• Large SUVs, vans, box trucks, Hummers – $3,000 to $5,000

Every day thousands of people make what they think will be a simple decision – to have tinting applied to their vehicle’s windows. The decision can quickly become complicated when they start shopping around. To start, within many local markets, the installed price can vary over $100 from one shop to the next for tinting the same vehicle. Then there are the different kinds of tinting from various manufacturers – non-reflective, hybrid, full metal, titanium, stainless steel – with colors ranging from bluish to gray or charcoal to the coffee brown found in bronze/stainless steel tints.
There are also different installation methods. Some shops leave a small gap or micro-edge at the top of the roll down windows, while other shops take the tinting all the way to the edge of the glass when the window is rolled down. The latter method looks much better, but can cost more because of the extra time involved in installation. Rear windows can usually be formed from one piece of tinting material. The one-piece rear window installation, when possible is preferable over the rear window being installed in several pieces. One-piece rear windows can also cost more due to the extra time and expertise needed for this type of tinting installation.
The price each shop charges for vehicles can depend on several variables.
Three of the most important are:

• Brand Name
• Type of material used
• Quality of the installation itself

The major tinting manufacturers usually have three different qualities of tinting materials available to the local tinting shops.

• The lowest quality is referred to as a non-reflective/dyed material. This type of tinting, usually the cheapest, has the shortest guarantee, and has a tendency to turn purple and form bubbles over time.
• Next is the hybrid or high performance tinting which is the best selling product nationwide. Hybrid tinting is referred to as a reflective product, but don’t let the term reflective confuse you. This type of tinting has a slightly different appearance and color from the non-reflective. The big difference is hybrid tinting rejects much more solar heat and the product warranties are much better than the standard non-reflective products. Most major tinting manufacturers offer extended or lifetime warranties for the hybrid/high performance products.
• The next grades of products are the relatively new full metal or ceramic tinting materials. These products usually have the same or slightly higher solar hear rejection statistics when compared to hybrid tinting materials. The warranties for full metal tinting are usually lifetime and some include a clause against fading of the material over an extended period of time. The higher reflective qualities of full metal tinting products are objectionable to some buyers. Care should be taken in choosing what type of tinting material best suits your needs.

When shopping around for a clear bra installer, be sure to do you homework to prevent a bad experience. Your installer should be trained by 3M or Xpel, have a plotter and software system to cut patterns at the shop, has at least 3-5 installs a week, uses a quality film, and can show you an example of a install in person. Be careful of a shop that orders film online because if they mess up the install they are going to do what they can to make it work.  Just because a shop can install window film doesn’t mean they can install clear bra material. We like to celebrate the conclusion of summer in our own unique way here at Pleasant Details: by hosting a Auto Expo! A gathering of leading manufacturers, enthusiasts and, of course, their cars for a day of education, and fun.

The Charleston Auto Expo is being held at the Omar Shrine Temple in Mt .Pleasant on September 25th 2011. There’s no better way to get your vehicle looking it’s best than to learn from the pros and from fellow hobbyists about the latest techniques and products. Meet your favorite manufacturers and see their products in action. The Expo is also a great opportunity to meet car club members from different areas face to face and see their handiwork up close.

The Charleston Auto Expo is open to anyone wanting to walk around and check out the products and demos.

Noon-5 pm on Sunday $5 admission W/free goodie bag of coupons. Every ticket is entered in the raffle for a chance to win great prizes!

The 2011 Charleston Auto Expo will include FREE Clinics, Workshops, and Demonstrations by vendors and sponsors highlighting services and products! the goal of the Charleston Auto Expo is to inform the average car owner of services and companies that help maintain or add value to a owners vehicle. Most demos will last less than 15 minutes and and will be followed up with questions. Below are a list of some of the demos throughout the day of the event:

The 3m scotchgard clear bra is a wonderful invention for any car-lover who treats his prized possession like a true friend. A man’s best friend is not always the family dog. Sometimes a car can take the place of a great pet and nothing hurts more than seeing that first scratch or dent on your favorite automobile.

However, traditional protective bras are not the most attractive option for car owners who want to protect their investments.
